Mitch Friedman
is a singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. This "funny
and interesting little man," according to music legend Ray
Davies, has been making his eclectic and entertaining brand of quirky
pop music with clever lyrics since 1985, almost entirely by himself
in his home studio.
Mitch has just released GAME SHOW TEETH
- an album of 13 curiously catchy, often amusing pop songs in a
wide variety of styles. The record's opening track, "This Is
a Song," starts things off in impressive and energetic fashion.
It is a hilarious, literal explanation of the classic song structure
found in most pop hits. Other highlights include the They Might
Be Giants-esque "I Have Never Lied," and the wordplay
filled, hyperactively folky "The Man That Talked Too Much."
Overall, the mood remains playful, and the arrangements surprising.
This is Friedman's fourth CD release, and
follows his award winning, unusual concept album for kids from 2005,
PURPLE BURT. Long time friends and musical heroes Andy Partridge
and Dave Gregory, of the critically acclaimed UK band XTC, make
their third appearance on one of Mitch Friedman's albums. Other
special guest contributors include "the godfather of DIY/home
recording," R. Stevie Moore, as well as former Psychedelic
Furs/Amy Rigby/Martha Wainwright keyboardist, and current musical
director of New York City's Loser's Lounge, Joe McGinty.
Mitch Friedman has performed his music
live on only a handful of occasions over the years. Instead, he
prefers to focus his energies in the studio, striving to craft the
perfect pop song. Drawing on his background in video editing, Mitch
recently produced an innovative and oddly educational music video
for "This Is a Song," which Andy Partridge describes as
"a piece of minimalist perfection, and perhaps the invention
of a new genre - Obviousism."
Judging from the feedback Mitch has received
so far, GAME SHOW TEETH is an album that is musically satisfying,
lyrically entertaining, visually appealing, and sure to be a welcome
addition to any discerning pop aficionado's collection.
